Reliance To Realign Russian Oil Imports With India’s Guidelines

Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), India’s largest private refiner, has begun recalibrating its Russian crude oil imports to align with the Government of India’s latest guidelines. The decision follows new U.S. and European sanctions on major Russian oil companies.

India’s Role In Russian Oil Trade

India has been the biggest buyer of Russian seaborne crude this year, importing nearly 1.7 million barrels per day between January and September 2025. With sanctions tightening on companies such as Rosneft and Lukoil, Indian refiners—including RIL—are reviewing contracts and supply chains.

Compliance And Continuity

Reliance has stated that while no immediate suspension is planned, it will remain “fully aligned” with government directives. The company is expected to adjust contracts, rerouting strategies and payment systems to maintain compliance while ensuring energy security.

Broader Market Impact

This recalibration could ease Western diplomatic pressure on India but may also alter the India-Russia energy equation. For global markets, reduced Indian intake of Russian crude could contribute to tighter supply conditions and influence international oil prices.
