Reliance Infra Achieves Milestone in Indigenous 155mm Shells
Reliance Infrastructure has become the first private Indian company to successfully design and develop next-generation 155mm artillery ammunition. This achievement is a major milestone in India’s efforts to build self-reliant defense capabilities and reduce dependence on imports.
The project was developed under the Design-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) initiative, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE). Reliance Infra has engineered four types of 155mm shells using entirely indigenous technologies.
Major Orders and Export Plans Ahead
Following the successful development phase, the company is now ready to commence full-scale production. It has already established a domestic supply chain involving ten Indian firms, reinforcing local manufacturing ecosystems.
Reliance Infra anticipates securing orders worth ₹10,000 crore from the Ministry of Defence over the next ten years. Simultaneously, it is exploring global defense markets, targeting an additional ₹10,000 crore in exports during the same period. These developments signal a significant economic and strategic boost to India’s defense industrial base.
Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City to Power Production
To support its production goals, Reliance Infra is building the Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC) in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. With an investment of ₹5,000 crore, this state-of-the-art greenfield facility will manufacture artillery shells, propellants, and high-energy explosives.
The plant’s expected capacity includes 200,000 artillery shells, 10,000 tons of explosives, and 2,000 tons of propellants annually, making it one of the largest private sector facilities of its kind in India.
Strategic Significance for India’s Defense Ecosystem
Reliance Infra stood out as the only private company selected under the program alongside public sector firm Yantra India Limited. This not only highlights the company’s defense manufacturing credentials but also reflects a shift in India’s policy toward greater private sector involvement in defense.
With this milestone, Reliance Infra positions itself as a central player in the country’s evolving defense ecosystem. Its achievements align with the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and affirm the capability of Indian industry to deliver complex defense solutions.
