Reliance Industries to Invest ₹65,000 Crore in 500 Compressed Biogas Plants in Andhra Pradesh
Reliance Industries has announced a monumental investment of ₹65,000 crore to set up 500 compressed biogas (CBG) plants across Andhra Pradesh. The initiative will make use of around 500,000 acres of barren and waste land in districts such as Prakasam, Anantapur, Chittoor, and Kadapa. Once fully operational, the plants are expected to produce 4 million tonnes of clean CBG annually along with 1.1 million metric tonnes of organic fertilizer, marking a significant leap in India’s green energy transition.
Foundation Stone Laid in Prakasam
The foundation stone for the first CBG plant was laid in Kanigiri, Prakasam district. This plant alone involves an investment of ₹139 crore and will produce 100 tonnes of CBG per day. The project is anticipated to generate employment for approximately 2.5 lakh people, both directly and indirectly, providing a major economic boost for the region.
Sustainable Farming and Environmental Benefits
Alongside energy generation, the project will produce about 1 crore tonnes of fermented organic manure each year. This organic byproduct is expected to replace chemical fertilizers on a large scale, rejuvenate degraded soil, and enhance agricultural productivity. It is aimed at supporting farmers with cost-effective and eco-friendly solutions, thereby improving income levels and promoting sustainable farming.
Part of Reliance’s Clean Energy Vision
This major investment is in line with Reliance Industries’ broader strategy of diversifying into renewable and sustainable energy. The company’s shift toward compressed biogas production highlights its commitment to energy self-reliance, reduced carbon emissions, and rural development.
As the biogas plants roll out in phases, they are set to play a transformative role not just in India’s energy mix, but also in reviving the economic landscape of rural Andhra Pradesh through green innovation and job creation.
