
RBI Appoints Sonali Sen Gupta as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has named Sonali Sen Gupta as a new Executive Director (ED), effective October 9, 2025.
Long RBI Career
Sen Gupta has worked at the RBI for over 30 years, holding roles across diverse divisions such as banking regulation, financial inclusion, supervision, and human resources. Before this elevation, she served as Regional Director in Karnataka’s RBI office.
New Responsibilities
In her role as ED, she will oversee three key departments: Consumer Education & Protection, Financial Inclusion & Development, and Inspection. These portfolios handle citizen rights, outreach to underserved populations, and institutional compliance within the RBI.
Profile & Achievements
She holds a postgraduate degree in Banking & Finance and is a certified associate of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF). Sen Gupta has represented India in global forums including the G20’s Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) and OECD’s International Network on Financial Education (INFE). She also serves as RBI’s nominee director on the board of Indian Overseas Bank.
Significance
Her appointment comes amid ongoing restructuring at the RBI, following a reshuffle of deputy governor portfolios. The selection signals the central bank’s intent to strengthen oversight in consumer rights, financial access, and institutional integrity.
