Ravneet Singh Bittu Resigns as Union Minister
President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Ravneet Singh Bittu from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect. The decision was taken on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Ravneet Singh Bittu Resigns as Minister
Bittu served as Minister of State for Railways and Minister of State for Food Processing Industries in the Modi government. Rashtrapati Bhavan confirmed his departure through an official communiqué but did not disclose a specific reason for the resignation.
Bittu thanked President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi for allowing him to serve in the Union government. He said it had been an honour to work for the country, particularly for the people of Punjab, and maintained that his public service journey would continue.
The government has not immediately announced who will take charge of his ministerial responsibilities.
Rajya Sabha Term Ended in June
Bittu’s Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21, 2026. He represented Rajasthan in the Upper House from August 2024 after being elected to serve the remainder of a vacant term.
The BJP did not nominate him for another Rajya Sabha term during the latest elections. Although his departure followed the completion of his parliamentary tenure, no official statement has directly identified this as the reason for his ministerial resignation.
Punjab Assembly Election Plans
Bittu is expected to focus on Punjab politics ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. He previously indicated that he wanted to return to state-level politics after spending nearly 17 years in Parliament.
A former Congress leader, Bittu joined the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha election. He unsuccessfully contested the Ludhiana seat but was subsequently inducted into the Union government and elected to the Rajya Sabha.
Bittu previously represented Anandpur Sahib and Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha. He is the grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.
