Rajasthan Candidate Arrested Amid Violent Protests in Tonk Bypolls

Rajasthan Independent candidate Naresh Meena was arrested today following a dramatic series of events in Tonk district, where he allegedly slapped an election official during the bypolls.

The arrest, which took place under heightened security, was met with fierce protests from Meena’s supporters, who clashed with police, leading to rioting, stone-pelting, and the destruction of vehicles.

Violence Erupts in Samravata Village After Arrest Attempt

The incident occurred on Wednesday when Meena reportedly assaulted Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary near a polling booth where the SDM was supervising election procedures. The attack was captured on video, prompting the police to initiate an arrest. As officers moved in, hundreds of Meena’s supporters gathered, resulting in violent clashes. Protesters threw stones at the police and set vehicles ablaze. Ajmer Range Inspector General Om Prakash confirmed that over 60 people have been detained in connection with the unrest.

Significant Damage in Tonk as STF Moves in for Search Operations

The aftermath of the clash left Samravata village in disarray, with 24 large vehicles and 48 motorcycles burned, and several homes damaged. Early Thursday, Special Task Force (STF) units were deployed to restore order, conduct searches, and investigate those involved in the violence.

Tonk Superintendent of Police Vikas Sangwan outlined the events, explaining, “In Samravata, some people had boycotted voting. SDM, Tehsildar, Additional SP, and other officials visited the area to address the issue. During this time, Naresh Meena entered the polling station and assaulted the SDM. Our officers acted immediately to restrain him, and following our intervention, voting continued peacefully.”

Meena Alleges Harassment of Supporters

In his defence, Naresh Meena accused the SDM of mistreating locals, stating, “The SDM previously assaulted a woman in Hindoli, along with her husband and a teacher, threatening job loss if they didn’t vote. My supporters have faced harassment since October 25; campaign posters have been vandalised, and attempts were made to prevent people from voting for me.”

Amid ongoing tension, additional security personnel have been stationed in Tonk to prevent further violence. Investigations continue to identify those involved in the rioting and arson, while the situation remains tense in the region.
