Rahul Gandhi’s Claim About Arun Jaitley Fact-Checked by Son

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed at a legal conference that former Union Minister Arun Jaitley was “sent to threaten” him over his opposition to India’s farm laws. This claim was swiftly denied by Rohan Jaitley, Arun Jaitley’s son.

Timeline Doesn’t Add Up

Arun Jaitley passed away in August 2019—well before the farm laws were introduced in 2020. Rohan Jaitley pointed out that it is factually impossible for his late father to have confronted Rahul Gandhi over legislation that came after his death.

Alleged Threat Quote Misplaced

Rahul claimed Jaitley warned him: “If you keep opposing the government on the farm laws, we will have to act against you.” Rahul said he responded, “I don’t think you know who you are talking to.” But both Rohan and the BJP rejected the timeline and the content of the alleged warning.

BJP Labels It ‘Fake News’

The BJP’s communication team called the allegation misleading and inaccurate. They urged Rahul to avoid distorting timelines and invoking the memory of departed leaders for political impact.

Rahul Also Raised Other Issues

At the same event, Rahul accused the Election Commission of rigging the 2024 general election. He claimed a detailed review of voting data suggested manipulation. He also reiterated criticism of the Rafale jet deal and warned of erosion in India’s constitutional framework.

Political Fallout Rapid and Sharp

Rohan Jaitley criticized Rahul for politicising the memory of his father and likened it to Rahul’s prior comments about the late Manohar Parrikar. BJP leaders, meanwhile, demanded that historical facts not be altered to fit narratives.
