Rahul Gandhi Slams Trump Tariff, Questions PM Modi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has sharply criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 25% additional tariff on Indian imports, calling it an “attempt to blackmail India.” Gandhi’s remarks came during a media interaction on Wednesday, where he also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of failing to stand up to U.S. pressure.

Trump’s fresh tariff move, which is yet to take effect formally, is seen as part of a broader protectionist trade strategy. Several Indian goods, including auto parts, textiles, and electronic items, are likely to be affected if the tariffs are enforced.

Rahul Gandhi Questions Modi’s Silence on Tariff Move

Rahul Gandhi questioned the Prime Minister’s lack of response to the development, suggesting that Modi’s close association with Trump had not helped protect Indian economic interests. “The Prime Minister calls him a close friend. But when Trump hits India with extra tariffs, where is the friendship?” Gandhi asked.

He further added that India’s foreign policy should be guided by national interest and not by personal relationships. The Congress MP warned that blindly aligning with global powers without demanding respect would hurt India’s trade autonomy and strategic credibility.

India Yet to Respond Officially

The Ministry of Commerce has so far not issued a detailed response to Trump’s announcement. However, government officials are reportedly assessing the potential impact on exports and weighing options, including diplomatic talks and possible WTO consultations.

Trade experts believe that while the U.S. remains an important market for Indian exports, India must be prepared to assert its position in global trade forums. They have also suggested that India use this opportunity to diversify its export markets and strengthen domestic manufacturing.

With political reactions intensifying and trade implications looming, all eyes are now on how the Indian government responds in the coming days.
