Rahul Gandhi Seeks Special Parliament Session on National Crisis
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to convene a special session of Parliament at the earliest. In his letter, Rahul Gandhi stressed the importance of addressing pressing national concerns through an immediate and all-party dialogue in both Houses.
Call for Urgent Debate on National Issues
According to sources familiar with the communication, the Congress leader highlighted the need for a comprehensive discussion on a series of national crises that require urgent legislative attention. Although the letter does not publicly list specific topics, the backdrop of recent terror attacks, economic distress signals, and increasing geopolitical tension is believed to have influenced the demand for a special session.
The opposition, under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, has been vocal about the government’s handling of internal security, inflation, unemployment, and rising communal violence. His letter is being seen as an effort to bring these issues into the formal Parliamentary domain rather than keeping them confined to street protests and media statements.
Political Pressure Mounts Ahead of Monsoon Session
The demand for a special session also intensifies the political climate ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session. By invoking a constitutional route, Rahul Gandhi is attempting to build pressure on the government to either concede floor space for debate or risk appearing evasive on national challenges.
Observers note that while the convening of a special session lies entirely at the discretion of the Union Cabinet, such a formal request from the Leader of Opposition signals rising parliamentary assertiveness from the opposition bloc.
The Prime Minister’s Office has not yet officially responded to the request. If accepted, this could be the first such session initiated by a formal appeal from the Opposition in recent years, and may pave the way for a highly charged political showdown in Parliament.
