Rahul Gandhi Says Home Minister Did Not Answer His Questions
Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said Union Home Minister Amit Shah failed to answer key questions raised during the Lok Sabha debate on electoral reforms. Speaking to reporters after the session, Gandhi described Shah’s reply as “completely defensive” and lacking clarity on several issues he had highlighted.
Gandhi Lists Unanswered Points
Gandhi said he had asked the Home Minister for explanations on voter list transparency, the architecture and security layers of EVMs, and allegations concerning BJP leaders allegedly voting in more than one state. He also questioned the provision granting legal immunity to the Chief Election Commissioner, but said none of these queries were addressed satisfactorily in Shah’s speech.
Opposition Walks Out of Lok Sabha
The disagreement escalated when Gandhi and other INDIA bloc MPs staged a walkout during the discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition members argued that their concerns were either dismissed or not responded to in detail.
Shah Defends Procedure and Position
Earlier in the House, Shah had countered opposition allegations and explained that the SIR process was meant to improve electoral roll accuracy. He also reminded MPs that parliamentary rules dictate the order of speeches, responding to Gandhi’s objections over speaking order.
Growing Tensions Over Electoral Reforms
The exchange reflects heightened political tension as parties continue to clash over electoral integrity, roll revision mechanisms, and voting security ahead of several upcoming state elections.
