Rahul Gandhi Demands Treason Trial for Gyanesh Kumar
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded the removal and prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of facilitating electoral irregularities and undermining India’s democratic process. Addressing the INDIA bloc’s symbolic impeachment proceedings in New Delhi on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Gandhi warned that opposition parties would continue pursuing accountability and would neither forgive nor forget those they believed had compromised electoral integrity.
Rahul Gandhi Demands Treason Trial for Gyanesh Kumar
Speaking at the event held at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, Gandhi supported the symbolic motion seeking Kumar’s removal and argued that the Chief Election Commissioner should face prosecution for treason.
He claimed the opposition possessed evidence that could make Kumar’s continuation in office untenable and suggested further disclosures were forthcoming.
Gandhi also accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of benefiting from alleged electoral manipulation. These accusations remain unproven.
Rahul Gandhi Questions 13.3 Crore Voter Deletions
Gandhi alleged that 13.3 crore voters had been deleted from electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision exercise, representing approximately 15% of the electorate.
He questioned how the Election Commission could justify such deletions when the affected voters had supposedly participated in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress leader argued that the figures raised fundamental questions about electoral legitimacy. However, voter-roll revisions do not automatically establish that previous votes were illegal or fraudulent.
INDIA Bloc Prepares November 1 Delhi Protest
The symbolic proceedings were presided over by former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, with opposition representatives adopting a resolution against Kumar.
The exercise has no constitutional authority to remove the Chief Election Commissioner, whose removal requires a formal parliamentary process.
The BJP dismissed the event as political theatre and criticised the opposition for conducting mock parliamentary proceedings.
Gandhi announced that the campaign would continue with a demonstration at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, bringing together opposition parties and civil society groups.
