Rahul Gandhi Demands Clarification from PM Modi on Kangana Ranaut’s Farm Laws Remark
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday demanded clarification from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding BJP MP Kangana Ranaut’s recent remarks suggesting the revival of the repealed farm laws. Gandhi expressed concern over the proposal and warned that the INDIA alliance would stand united against any attempts to bring back the controversial laws.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Congress leader accused the BJP of “testing ideas” by floating them through public figures to gauge reactions. “This is exactly what happened when one of their MPs talked about reviving the farm laws, which were black laws. Modi Ji, please clarify whether you are against this or if you are up to mischief again,” Gandhi said.
He emphasized that the INDIA alliance would strongly oppose any move to reintroduce the farm laws, recalling the deaths of over 700 farmers during the protests. “If those farmer laws are revived, I guarantee that the entire INDIA alliance will stand against you,” Gandhi warned. He also criticized Modi for not observing even two minutes of silence for the martyred farmers.
In his post, Gandhi questioned who is driving the government’s policy decisions: “Who is deciding the government’s policy? A BJP MP or Prime Minister Modi?” He reiterated that the BJP must respect the sacrifices made by the farmers, especially those from Haryana and Punjab, and vowed that the INDIA alliance would block any steps that harm farmers.
The controversy arose after Kangana Ranaut, the actor-turned-politician and BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, suggested that the scrapped farm reform laws should be reintroduced, urging farmers to demand their return for their own benefit. Her comments stirred backlash, prompting her to issue a public apology later in the day.
In a video message, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified that Ranaut’s statements were her personal views and did not reflect the party’s position on the farm laws.
Ranaut also expressed regret over her remarks, acknowledging the disappointment caused and admitting, “I need to remind myself that I am no longer just an actor, I am a politician too, and my opinions should reflect the party’s stance.”
