Rahul Gandhi Defends Vadra, Blames ‘Witch Hunt’

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has slammed the Enforcement Directorate’s chargesheet against Robert Vadra, calling it the latest episode in a decade-long political vendetta. In a social media post, Gandhi said his brother-in-law had been “hounded by this government for the last ten years” and described the case as a continuation of a “witch hunt.”

ED Files Charges in Gurugram Land Case

The Enforcement Directorate filed a chargesheet on July 17 against Robert Vadra and his firm, Sky Light Hospitality Pvt Ltd, in connection with a 2008 land purchase deal in Shikohpur, Gurugram. The agency alleges that forged documents were used in the acquisition of 3.53 acres of land. It has provisionally attached 43 assets worth ₹37.6 crore linked to Vadra and his firm.

This is the first time Vadra has been formally named in a prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Congress Alleges Political Targeting

Rahul Gandhi voiced full support for Vadra, his sister Priyanka Gandhi, and their children, stating that the family continues to face “malicious, politically motivated slander.” Congress leaders have called the chargesheet an act of harassment timed to distract from real issues and suppress the opposition ahead of elections.

Party spokespersons questioned the basis of the case, asking whether purchasing land now amounts to a criminal offence. Senior leaders pointed out that the matter has been probed multiple times over the years without any conviction.

Vadra Says He Will Defend Himself Legally

Robert Vadra has denied any wrongdoing and reiterated that he is cooperating fully with the investigation. His legal team has confirmed that he will contest the charges in court and is confident of proving his innocence.

Legal and Political Fallout Ahead

The case will now be heard in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. Meanwhile, the Congress has sharpened its criticism of the government’s use of investigative agencies, framing the chargesheet as a political tool to target opposition families. With elections drawing closer, the legal case and political narrative are likely to continue unfolding in parallel.
