Rahul Gandhi Condemns BJP, Backs Sixth Schedule Demand For Ladakh

Rahul Gandhi has accused the central government and the RSS of attacking Ladakh’s people and culture amid violent protests in Leh. He demanded that Ladakh be granted protections under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which offers greater autonomy to tribal regions.

According to official data, four people died and dozens were injured during clashes between protesters and security forces in Leh. Protesters had rallied for statehood and safeguards for land and employment rights. In response, authorities imposed curfew, suspended internet services in parts of the region, and arrested prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk. He was taken into custody under the National Security Act and later moved to Jodhpur jail.

Gandhi criticized what he called a “silencing” campaign, asserting that the government’s reaction to protests was heavy-handed. “Ladakhis asked for a voice. The BJP responded by killing four young men and jailing Sonam Wangchuk,” he said.

The unrest reflects longstanding grievances in Ladakh since its separation from Jammu & Kashmir in 2019, which removed many constitutional safeguards. Protesters and local bodies have repeatedly demanded inclusion of the region under special protections, arguing that current governance leaves them vulnerable to resource exploitation and loss of cultural identity.
