Putin Praises Trump, Warns U.S. Over Tomahawk Support

Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered guarded praise for U.S. President Donald Trump while warning that supplying Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine would mark a dangerous escalation in U.S.–Russia relations. He made the remarks at a foreign-policy forum in Sochi on October 2, 2025.

Compliment With Caution

Putin acknowledged Trump’s diplomatic style, noting his role in past peace initiatives. However, he cautioned that U.S. approval of long-range missile supplies to Ukraine would cross what he called a “qualitatively new” line in bilateral tensions.

Battlefield Impact Questioned

Although critical of the potential U.S. move, Putin said Tomahawk deliveries would not significantly change the situation on the ground. He insisted Russia’s air defenses would adapt and neutralize the threat. He also suggested extending the New START nuclear treaty for a year but warned Moscow could walk away if Washington showed disinterest.

Maritime and NATO Accusations

Putin accused Western nations of “piracy” for targeting Russian oil tankers and threatened retaliation if such incidents continue. He also mocked NATO’s concerns over drone flights in Europe, describing them as exaggerated provocations.
