Putin, Iran FM Araghchi Hold Crisis Talks Post U.S. Strikes
In a high-stakes diplomatic encounter, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Moscow on June 23, days after the United States launched a series of airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities. The meeting underscores deepening cooperation between Moscow and Tehran amid escalating tensions in West Asia.
Araghchi arrived in Moscow with what he described as “urgent matters” to discuss. The timing of the visit—coming immediately after the U.S. military operation targeting Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—amplifies the geopolitical weight of their discussions. Both nations are believed to be aligning strategies in response to what they see as unilateral and dangerous moves by Washington.
Putin Condemns U.S. Action
President Putin described the American strikes as “absolutely unprovoked aggression,” reiterating Russia’s support for Iran while stopping short of committing any military backing. He stressed the need for diplomatic solutions and indicated that Russia has shared peace frameworks with both Iran and Israel in an effort to de-escalate the rapidly unfolding crisis.
Moscow has also publicly warned of the global ramifications of further military escalations, particularly with Iran hinting at retaliatory measures that could disrupt the global oil trade, including the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Operation Midnight Hammer
The U.S. strikes, part of a classified operation dubbed “Midnight Hammer,” targeted Iran’s underground enrichment sites using a mix of GBU-57 bunker-busting bombs and Tomahawk cruise missiles. While the U.S. declared the mission a success with significant damage inflicted, Iranian officials claimed minimal operational impact and vowed to maintain their nuclear development program.
The attacks have significantly raised tensions in the region and globally, prompting a flurry of diplomatic activity from both allies and neutral powers. Russia’s growing closeness to Iran comes at a time when global power alignments are shifting.
