Putin Denounces U.S. Sanctions on Russian Oil Majors
Russian President Vladimir Putin has sharply criticized the United States for imposing sanctions on Russia’s largest oil producers, Rosneft and Lukoil. He described the move as an “unfriendly act” that will have consequences but insisted that Russia will not bow to foreign pressure.
Putin Says Russia Will Not Act Under Pressure
Putin declared that “no self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever do anything under pressure,” reinforcing Moscow’s position that it will continue charting its own course despite restrictions. He warned that the sanctions risk disrupting global energy markets, potentially raising prices for nations reliant on imports.
Warning Against Use of Western Weapons
The Russian leader also cautioned that if Western long-range weapons are used against Russian territory, Moscow’s response “will be very serious, if not overwhelming.” His comments came shortly after the U.S. postponed a scheduled summit and widened its sanctions strategy alongside the European Union.
Global Energy Market Impact
Rosneft and Lukoil together make up a significant share of Russia’s crude exports. Analysts suggest the sanctions could restrict Russia’s ability to access global buyers, while secondary sanctions may complicate trade for countries like India and China. However, Russia is expected to look for alternative buyers to offset the restrictions.
