Putin Calls Zelensky’s Leadership “Illegitimate”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is “illegitimate,” arguing that Kyiv did not hold elections after the expiry of the previous presidential term. Putin said it would be “senseless” to negotiate or sign any peace agreement with Ukraine while Zelensky remains in office.

Moscow Sets Conditions For Peace

Putin reiterated that Russia would only consider peace talks if Ukrainian forces withdraw from all territories claimed by Moscow, including areas occupied since the 2022 escalation. He warned that Russia would continue military operations if Kyiv refuses these conditions.

Response To US-Backed Peace Proposal

On the recently circulated US-backed peace framework, Putin said it contains “ideas” but cannot be a basis for talks unless Ukraine accepts Russia’s core demands. He also repeated Moscow’s long-standing opposition to Ukraine joining NATO.

Diplomatic Standoff Deepens

The remarks add further strain to already stalled diplomatic efforts. Ukraine and its Western allies have rejected Russia’s conditions, insisting any settlement must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial borders. With both sides holding firm positions, the likelihood of a breakthrough remains low.
