Putin Calls Western Troops in Ukraine ‘Legitimate Targets’
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that any Western military units deployed to Ukraine during active combat would be treated as “legitimate targets” for Russian strikes. His comments followed a Paris summit where 26 nations pledged security guarantees for Ukraine.
Coalition of the Willing
The pledges included the possibility of a “reassurance force” made up of land, air, or naval elements. Such a force would only be considered after a ceasefire or full peace agreement, though specifics like troop numbers and responsibilities remain undecided.
Putin’s Justification
Putin argued that bringing in foreign forces while the conflict continues would worsen the situation and derail peace efforts. He added that if a durable peace deal were reached, Russia would have no need to oppose international security arrangements.
Peace Talks Offer
Alongside his warning, Putin repeated his willingness to host peace negotiations in Moscow. He promised secure conditions for talks, but Western and Ukrainian leaders remain doubtful of Russia’s intentions.
