Putin Announces Temporary Easter Ceasefire in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Hostilities
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a 30-hour unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine to mark Orthodox Easter. The truce, which began at 6 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday, is set to end at midnight on Sunday. Declaring the move as a humanitarian gesture, Putin called on Ukraine to match the pause in military activity. However, he warned that Russian forces would remain alert and would respond if provoked.
The ceasefire is seen as an attempt by Moscow to showcase restraint during a religious holiday that holds significance across much of Eastern Europe. However, the announcement was met with little enthusiasm or trust from Kyiv.
Ukraine Remains Deeply Skeptical
Ukrainian leaders reacted with disbelief and criticism, citing continued attacks and air raid sirens in several regions even as the ceasefire was announced. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Russia had rejected a previous 30-day ceasefire proposed by the United States and other international partners—raising questions about Moscow’s true intentions.
Ukrainian officials argued that such ceasefires are often used by Russia to regroup militarily, rather than to pursue genuine de-escalation. They further alleged that any pause declared by Russia rarely results in a halt to its aggressive tactics on the ground.
Major Prisoner Swap Takes Place
In a rare moment of cooperation, both sides executed the largest prisoner exchange since the conflict began over three years ago. Russia released 277 Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine handed over 246 Russian troops. Several of the exchanged individuals were reportedly injured. The exchange was coordinated by a neutral third party and is seen as a cautiously positive development amid ongoing hostilities.
Fighting Continues Despite Truce Declaration
Despite the ceasefire, combat operations have not entirely stopped. Russia claimed it now controls 99.5% of a key contested area in the northeast, although Ukrainian forces reportedly still hold out in parts of the region. Overnight, Russia launched 87 drones toward Ukraine, the majority of which were intercepted or jammed. Damage was reported in areas including Odesa and Sumy, with no confirmed casualties but ongoing property destruction.
These developments highlight the fragile and complex nature of the ceasefire, raising doubts about whether it reflects a serious step toward peace or a temporary tactical maneuver.
Outlook for Peace Talks Remains Uncertain
The temporary truce comes at a critical juncture in diplomatic efforts. International mediators have indicated that the window for meaningful negotiations is rapidly closing.
