Putin Admits Russian Missiles Caused Jet Crash

Russian President Vladimir Putin has admitted that Russian air defenses were responsible for the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane in December 2024, which killed 38 people. He said the missiles did not directly hit the aircraft but exploded nearby while targeting Ukrainian drones.

How the Incident Happened

The jet, flying from Baku to Grozny, was struck during its approach when missiles detonated about 10 metres away. Putin explained that Russian forces were aiming at drones operating in the region, but the explosion inadvertently damaged the plane, leading to the deadly crash.

Russia’s Response

Putin announced that compensation would be provided to the victims’ families and said legal action would be taken against those responsible. This is the first time Russia has openly acknowledged its role in the tragedy.

Diplomatic and Safety Concerns

The admission comes after months of tension between Russia and Azerbaijan following the crash. Analysts suggest the acknowledgment may ease bilateral friction but also underscores the danger of operating civilian flights near conflict zones where air defenses are active.
