Pune Set to Experience Heavy Rainfall in the Next 24 Hours, IMD Issues Red Alert
As the monsoon begins its withdrawal from northern India, Pune and its surrounding regions are expected to experience significant rainfall in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune district, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
The monsoon’s retreat from Rajasthan and Gujarat is nearly a week ahead of schedule, according to the IMD. So far, the country has recorded 886.9 mm of rainfall, 5% above the normal 843.2 mm. This excess rainfall has replenished water reservoirs across most parts of the country.
The current rains are attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal, which has created low-pressure areas in various parts of West Central India and coastal Andhra Pradesh. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall (more than 120 mm) is expected in Western Maharashtra and Marathwada over the next 48 hours, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. A red alert has been issued for several parts of the state, including Pune, with rainfall expected to taper off after Thursday.
Monsoon withdrawal typically brings intense rainfall in the evenings, following hot daytime temperatures. Pune has already reported instances of waterlogging on major roads, leading to traffic disruptions during the intense rain spells.
