Priyanka Gandhi Targets Govt Over Vande Mataram Debate

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday criticised the central government for reviving the Vande Mataram debate in Parliament. She said the discussion had “only two reasons” — to distract from real national issues and to influence the upcoming West Bengal election.

The remarks were made during a Lok Sabha session held to mark the 150th anniversary of the national song.

Focus Should Be On Public Issues, Says Gandhi

Priyanka Gandhi said the government should concentrate on rising prices, unemployment and other economic problems rather than reopening old historical arguments. She accused the ruling party of using emotional subjects for political gain.

Gandhi also claimed that attempts were being made to revive controversies related to freedom fighters, which she called unnecessary and divisive.

Bengal Election Angle

According to her, the timing of the debate was linked to the West Bengal election, where cultural and identity-based themes often play a strong role in campaigning. She alleged that creating debate on national symbols was aimed at influencing voters in the state.

The government responded that the discussion was meant to honour heritage and national sentiment. The issue is likely to continue as the political temperature rises ahead of polls.
