Preliminary Report on Air India Crash Due Today

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is expected to release the preliminary report today on the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI‑171. The flight, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was en route from Ahmedabad to London when it crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12. As per international aviation norms, a preliminary report is typically released within 30 days of the incident.

Investigation Focuses on Fuel Control Switches

Investigators are examining the possible role of the engine fuel control switches, which may have been moved during takeoff, leading to a sudden loss of engine thrust. It remains uncertain whether this action was intentional, accidental, or the result of a technical malfunction. Early assessments suggest that mechanical failure is unlikely, but a final conclusion will require more data.

Black Boxes Fully Recovered

Contrary to some early reports, both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were recovered intact. Officials confirmed that the recorders provided clear and usable data, offering crucial insights into the final moments of the flight and the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Casualties and Impact

The crash resulted in the deaths of 241 people on board, including 230 passengers and 11 crew members. An additional 19 people on the ground were also killed, making this the deadliest aviation disaster in India in over three decades. One person on board survived the crash, marking a rare case of survival in such a major accident.

Next Steps in the Probe

While the preliminary report will outline the immediate findings, it will not assign blame. A full and final investigation report is expected in the coming months. Investigators from India are working alongside international experts to study aircraft systems, pilot actions, and possible human or system errors.

Expected Safety Outcomes

Aviation regulators may recommend procedural changes or enhanced pilot training based on the findings. Although the Boeing 787 has a strong safety record, this incident will likely lead to further scrutiny of cockpit procedures and engine system safeguards to prevent future tragedies.
