Power Engineers Warn of Nationwide Stir Over Proposed Privatisation in the Power Sector
The All India Power Engineers Federation has warned of a nationwide agitation if the Centre moves ahead with the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill and continues the push for privatisation in the power sector. The federation said the changes could have serious implications for consumers, farmers and public sector power utilities.
Opposition to Power Sector Privatisation
AIPEF leaders said the proposed amendments would weaken the role of state-run power utilities and open the door for increased private control over electricity distribution. They argued that privatisation could lead to higher tariffs and reduced safeguards for agricultural and low-income consumers who depend on subsidies.
Engineers Pass Resolution
The warning was issued after a meeting of power engineers and employees from several states, where a resolution was adopted calling for coordinated protests if the government does not reconsider its approach. The federation said power sector employees across the country are being mobilised for a united response.
Call for Wider Support
AIPEF said it plans to reach out to farmers’ organisations and consumer groups to build broader opposition to the bill. The federation maintained that electricity is an essential public service and should remain under public control.
