Ponting Calls India Strongest T20I Team

India’s successful defence of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title has drawn strong praise from former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who said the current side may be the strongest T20I team the country has produced. Ponting’s remarks came after India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the 2026 final in Ahmedabad, becoming the first men’s team to retain the T20 World Cup and the first to win it on home soil.

Ricky Ponting Backs India T20 Team

Speaking after the tournament, Ponting said it was difficult to argue against the view that this Indian side is the country’s best T20I outfit. He pointed to the team’s depth, balance and experience, saying India’s consistency in major white-ball events over the past few years has separated it from earlier generations. He also noted that many players arrived with strong high-pressure match experience from both international cricket and the IPL.

India T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign

India’s title-winning campaign was built on aggressive batting and a balanced bowling unit. The team bounced back strongly after a defeat to South Africa in the Super Eight stage, regrouping in the second half of the tournament and producing a series of commanding displays. India went on to post 250-plus totals in three of its last four matches, including the knockout rounds, before sealing a dominant win over New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

India White-Ball Depth And Experience

Ponting also said India’s strength goes beyond T20 cricket, describing the current group as an outstanding white-ball side overall. He highlighted the squad’s experience, tournament temperament and settled playing combination as major reasons for its success. According to him, the setback against South Africa may even have helped India refocus before the decisive stages, allowing the team to lock in its strongest XI and finish the tournament with authority.
