PM Modi Unveils Stamp & Coin for RSS 100 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, 2025, released a commemorative postage stamp and a ₹100 special coin in New Delhi to mark the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The event was held at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre with RSS leaders in attendance.

Unique Features of the Coin and Stamp

The special coin carries India’s National Emblem on one side and, on the other, a depiction of Bharat Mata seated on a lion in “varad mudra” with RSS swayamsevaks bowing—this marks the first appearance of Bharat Mata on Indian currency in independent India. The coin also bears the RSS motto “Rashtriya Swaha, Idam Rashtriya, Idam Na Mama”. The postage stamp features a scene of RSS swayamsevaks participating in the 1963 Republic Day parade.

Modi’s Remarks and RSS Legacy

At the ceremony, Modi praised the RSS’s century-long journey as an “example of sacrifice, selfless service, nation-building, and discipline.” He called the founding of RSS on Vijayadashami 1925 a deliberate renewal of tradition, not a coincidence. He recalled that British colonial rule and Nizam regimes had persecuted RSS members and its founder, K. B. Hedgewar, faced imprisonment.

Modi also said today’s generation of volunteers is fortunate to witness the centenary, urging adherence to the principle “nation first.” He underscored the RSS’s involvement in disaster relief and social work across India.

Political Reactions and Context

While the event marks a milestone for the RSS, reactions have been mixed. Some political parties questioned the organization’s role during India’s freedom struggle and its alignment with ruling parties. Congress, for instance, asserted that RSS did not participate in the independence movement and called for clarity on historical narratives.

Nonetheless, the commemorative coin and stamp reinforce the symbolic importance of the RSS centenary in India’s public and political life.
