PM Modi to Visit Russia for BRICS Summit and Bilateral Talks with Putin

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.

The visit comes at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking PM Modi’s second trip to Russia this year. The summit, held under Russia’s chairmanship, will provide a key platform for discussions on global issues and multilateral cooperation among the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

BRICS Summit Focuses on Global Development and Security

The BRICS Summit in Kazan is themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security.” According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the event will allow leaders from BRICS countries to assess the progress of initiatives launched by the group and explore future areas of collaboration. The summit will also address significant global challenges, reflecting the growing importance of BRICS, which represents 41% of the world’s population, 24% of global GDP, and over 16% of world trade.

PM Modi’s Bilateral Meeting with Putin

In addition to attending the summit, PM Modi is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with President Putin on October 22. The two leaders will discuss ongoing cooperation between India and Russia, building on the agreements reached during PM Modi’s previous visit to Moscow in July for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

Russian President Putin extended the invitation for this bilateral meeting while addressing National Security Advisor Ajit Doval at the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting in St. Petersburg. Putin referred to PM Modi as a “good friend” and expressed his eagerness to meet and review the progress of their joint initiatives.

BRICS: A Strong Emerging Global Force

Since its formation in 2006, BRICS has grown into a major coalition of emerging economies, playing a significant role in shaping global economic policies. South Africa officially joined the group in 2010, adding a new dimension to BRICS and strengthening its global presence. The Kazan summit is expected to further reinforce the group’s objectives in fostering inclusive growth and global security.

This visit will serve as a crucial opportunity for India to engage with other BRICS nations and strengthen its bilateral ties with Russia, particularly amid changing global dynamics. PM Modi’s continued diplomatic engagement with Russia highlights the significance of the India-Russia partnership on various economic and strategic fronts.
