PM Modi to Attend G20 Summit in Brazil, Visit Nigeria and Guyana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a significant three-nation tour from November 16, with stops in Nigeria, Brazil, and Guyana. His tour includes attending the G20 Summit in Brazil and bolstering diplomatic and strategic ties with Nigeria and Guyana.

Strengthening India-Nigeria Relations

PM Modi’s first stop will be Nigeria on November 16-17, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in 17 years. Hosted at the invitation of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the visit aims to enhance India-Nigeria relations. Modi will review the strategic partnership between both nations and discuss avenues to further expand their bilateral ties. He is also expected to address the Indian community in Nigeria.

India and Nigeria share a strategic partnership that has deepened since 2007, spanning economic, energy, and defense collaborations. Approximately 200 Indian companies have invested over $27 billion in Nigeria, making India one of Nigeria’s leading investors.

G20 Summit in Brazil

The centerpiece of Modi’s tour will be his participation in the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 18-19. As part of the G20 troika with Brazil and South Africa, India has played an active role in shaping the summit’s agenda. During the event, Modi will address issues of global concern, building on discussions held at the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and the Voice of the Global South Summits. The summit is expected to provide an opportunity for Modi to engage in bilateral discussions with other world leaders on the sidelines.

India’s Diplomatic Outreach to Guyana and CARICOM

PM Modi will conclude his tour with a visit to Guyana from November 19-21, at the invitation of President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. This marks the first visit to Guyana by an Indian prime minister since 1968. Modi will meet with Ali and other senior Guyanese leaders, address the Guyanese Parliament, and engage with the Indian diaspora.

In Georgetown, Modi will also participate in the second CARICOM-India Summit and hold discussions with leaders from CARICOM member nations to further strengthen India’s ties with the Caribbean region. President Ali, who was the chief guest at India’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2023, will host the summit.

This three-nation tour underscores India’s commitment to enhancing global partnerships and fostering diplomatic ties with nations across multiple regions.
