PM Modi to Attend ASEAN Summit Virtually
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that he will attend the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, scheduled from October 26 to 28 in Kuala Lumpur, via video link. He cited India’s festive Deepavali celebrations as the reason for not travelling to Malaysia.
India’s Representation & Meeting Speculations
With Modi not making the trip, the government is expected to have S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, represent the country at most of the in-person sessions. The move has effectively ruled out a possible face-to-face meeting between Modi and Donald Trump, who is similarly expected to be present in Kuala Lumpur.
Diplomatic Implications
Analysts say Modi’s virtual attendance reduces the signalling value of a physical presence, especially as India seeks greater engagement with Southeast Asia under its “Act East” policy. The decision also underscores how scheduling, domestic commitments and diplomatic priorities can shape participation in major regional forums. The ASEAN summit will see all 10 member states participating, alongside key partners such as China, Japan and the U.S.
