PM Modi Targets Congress At Assam Rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday used a public event in Assam to sharply criticise the Congress, accusing it of working against India’s development while highlighting a fresh round of infrastructure spending in the Northeast. Speaking in Silchar on the second day of his Assam visit, Modi linked the criticism to what he described as decades of neglect of the Barak Valley and contrasted it with new investment under the current government.

PM Modi Attacks Congress In Assam

Addressing a rally in Silchar, Modi said Congress had become a tool in the hands of forces that were uncomfortable with India’s rapid growth. He also accused the party of failing the Northeast after Independence, arguing that earlier decisions had weakened the Barak Valley’s historic trade links and long-term economic prospects.

The speech was part political attack and part development pitch, with the Prime Minister using the platform to draw a contrast between past governance and ongoing infrastructure expansion in the region.

Assam Projects Worth Rs 24,000 Crore

Modi announced and inaugurated projects worth around Rs 24,000 crore in Assam, with a major focus on connectivity. The centrepiece was the Shillong-Silchar high-speed corridor, a 166-km project aimed at improving travel and freight movement between Meghalaya and Assam.

The broader package also fits into the Centre’s push to strengthen transport links, logistics and economic integration across the Northeast. The government has repeatedly projected such projects as central to faster regional development and improved market access.

Barak Valley Connectivity And Political Message

During the speech, Modi said the BJP government was working to change the region’s trajectory through better roads and modern infrastructure. The Barak Valley figured prominently in his remarks, both as an example of historical neglect and as a focus area for current investment.

The event also carried political significance ahead of Assam’s next Assembly election cycle, with the ruling party using the occasion to reinforce its development message in a key part of the state.
