PM Modi Skipped Four Calls from Trump, Says German Daily FAZ

German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) has reported that U.S. President Donald Trump attempted to call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at least four times in recent weeks. According to the report, Modi did not respond to any of the calls. The reasons for the non-response have not been disclosed, but the news comes as India and the U.S. face heightened tensions over tariffs.

Growing Diplomatic Strain

The FAZ report suggested that Modi’s decision not to take the calls reflects deliberate distancing at a time when Trump has imposed steep tariffs on Indian goods. The move, which raises duties to nearly 50% on some exports, has been sharply criticized by New Delhi. Analysts believe Modi’s silence may signal India’s intent to resist U.S. pressure while asserting its independent stance.

U.S.–India Relations Under Pressure

Relations between the two countries have come under strain in recent months. Alongside trade friction, Washington has also voiced displeasure over India’s continued imports of Russian oil. These issues have added to mistrust, putting pressure on a bilateral relationship that has historically spanned defense, technology, and security cooperation.
