
PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Support for Maldives’ Defence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to the Maldives on July 25, 2025, reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the island nation in enhancing its defence capabilities. He highlighted the strong and enduring relationship between the two countries, particularly in the area of security cooperation.
Strengthening Defence Cooperation
During his meeting with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi emphasized that India would continue to support the Maldives in strengthening its security infrastructure. India has been a key partner in providing defence assistance, including training, joint exercises, and the supply of military equipment.
Modi mentioned that India had recently handed over 72 heavy vehicles to the Maldives Ministry of Defence. These vehicles are intended to support the operational capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and improve its readiness for various security challenges.
Joint Defence and Security Initiatives
The two leaders also discussed ongoing joint defence initiatives, including the “Ekuverin” military exercise, which aims to improve interoperability between the armed forces of India and the Maldives. Furthermore, they reviewed progress on the Integrated Coastal Surveillance System, a project aimed at enhancing maritime security in the region.
PM Modi reiterated India’s policy of supporting its neighbouring countries in terms of defence and security, underscoring the importance of a stable and secure Indian Ocean region. The strengthened ties are seen as critical to maintaining regional peace and stability.
Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
Apart from defence, the leaders discussed broadening cooperation in various sectors such as economic development, tourism, education, and healthcare. The two countries also agreed to move forward with talks on a Free Trade Agreement to further deepen their bilateral relationship.
This visit signifies a strengthened India-Maldives partnership, with a focus on mutual interests and regional security in the Indian Ocean.
