PM Modi Promises New Vision for BRICS in 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India will usher in a “new form” of the BRICS grouping when it assumes the presidency in 2026. Speaking at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Modi laid out a transformative vision rooted in resilience, sustainability, and inclusive global leadership. The new framework, he stated, will revolve around the theme of “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
BRICS vision
Modi emphasized that under India’s stewardship, BRICS will evolve to prioritize cooperation on innovation, economic resilience, and sustainable development. Drawing from the successful presidency of the G20 under India, he said the group’s structure and functioning would be people-centric, transparent, and morally guided. The new approach, according to Modi, will reflect India’s continued commitment to multilateralism and fair global governance.
Climate justice
A major highlight of his speech was the call for climate action to be seen as a moral obligation rather than a policy choice. Modi argued that safeguarding the planet’s health is essential for humanity’s collective well-being. He stressed that climate justice must underpin BRICS’s strategic direction, reaffirming India’s leadership on global environmental platforms. The Prime Minister called for concrete steps to balance economic progress with ecological responsibility.
Global South focus
Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to championing the interests of the Global South. He proposed that BRICS become a stronger voice for developing nations by addressing shared challenges such as access to critical minerals, equitable technological growth, and setting global norms for emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. According to him, humanity must be placed at the center of policy-making, ensuring that progress does not come at the cost of equity and ethics.
As India prepares to take over the BRICS presidency in 2026, Modi’s address signals a major philosophical shift—from a transactional economic bloc to a values-based coalition rooted in justice, sustainability, and inclusive progress. His remarks have set the stage for a future where BRICS could serve as both a voice and a vehicle for the aspirations of the developing world.
