PM Modi Praises India’s Double Gold Triumph at Chess Olympiad, Meets Chess Champions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated India’s young chess players for their historic achievement at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where both the men’s and women’s teams claimed their maiden gold medals.
India made history over the weekend, with the men’s team defeating Slovenia and the women’s team triumphing over Azerbaijan in the final round, securing their first-ever gold medals at this prestigious global event.
In the men’s competition, D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa were instrumental in securing decisive victories in the 11th and final round. The women’s team clinched gold by overpowering Azerbaijan.
A video shared on social media showed PM Modi interacting with the chess champions, including R Vaishali, D Harika, Tania Sachdev, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa. During the interaction, the players presented Modi with a chessboard. Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi played a quick game of chess in front of the Prime Minister, leaving him mesmerized.
India’s men’s team completed the Olympiad with an impressive 21 out of 22 possible points, conceding only one draw against Uzbekistan and defeating all other opponents.
