PM Modi Marks 12 Years of Make in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the role of Make in India in expanding domestic manufacturing, investment and exports as the flagship initiative completed 12 years on September 25. Modi said the programme was focused on building infrastructure, enterprise and innovation that enable India to grow and prosper.
Make in India Completes 12 Years
Launched on September 25, 2014, Make in India was designed to attract investment, promote innovation, improve manufacturing infrastructure and strengthen India’s position as a global production hub.
The programme has since expanded into Make in India 2.0, covering 27 sectors, including 15 manufacturing and 12 services sectors. Government initiatives supporting the programme include Production Linked Incentive schemes, PM GatiShakti and the National Single Window System.
Electronics Manufacturing Records Major Expansion
Official data show electronics production increased from around ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. Mobile phone production rose from approximately ₹18,000 crore to ₹6.27 lakh crore over the same period, with India now the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer by volume.
Indigenous defence production also increased from ₹46,429 crore in 2014-15 to a record ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2025-26.
PLI Schemes Draw ₹2.40 Lakh Crore Investment
As of June 2026, Production Linked Incentive schemes had attracted ₹2.40 lakh crore in investment and generated more than ₹22.66 lakh crore in production and sales.
The schemes also supported over ₹15.20 lakh crore in exports and more than 14 lakh direct and indirect jobs across 14 sectors.
Modi said the broader objective remains to increase domestic production, attract greater investment and strengthen India’s export capabilities.
