PM Modi Leads Debate As Vande Mataram Row Returns

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a special discussion in Parliament on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, saying the national song had united generations during the freedom struggle. He said the song should not be viewed through a political or religious lens but through the idea of national pride.

The Prime Minister noted that Vande Mataram had inspired people during colonial rule and continues to represent devotion to the motherland.

Modi Defends Historical Figures

Modi rejected criticism that leaders of the past changed or diluted the song. He said those who shaped India’s independence movement made decisions based on unity and national interest, and their contributions should not be distorted.

He asked why the debate over Vande Mataram keeps resurfacing, saying the focus should be on honouring the legacy rather than reviving old disputes.

Vande Mataram Above Politics, Says PM

According to the Prime Minister, cultural symbols should not be used for political messaging. He reminded the House that the song belongs to the whole nation, not to any particular ideology or party.

Modi said the country must move forward with confidence, drawing strength from history while ensuring harmony among communities.

Opposition Reacts

Opposition leaders disagreed, saying the ruling party was trying to give the discussion a political angle. Some argued the timing of the debate was linked to state elections.

They said Parliament should concentrate on economic and social issues, but acknowledged that Vande Mataram remains a powerful part of India’s heritage.
