PM Modi: India’s True Enemy Is Dependence on Others
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, urged Indians to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign nations. He said dependence is India’s “biggest enemy” and stressed the need for self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Modi called self-dependence “medicine” needed to face global trade challenges, including recent U.S. tariffs and rising visa fee policies.
“No Major Enemy, Except Dependency”
Modi said India has no major external enemies. “If we have an enemy, it is our dependence on other countries,” he stated. He emphasized that India must become more self-reliant in manufacturing, trade, and critical sectors to safeguard its future and reduce vulnerabilities.
Context: Tariffs and Visa Fees
His remarks come at a time when India is facing international economic pressures. The U.S. has levied high tariffs on certain Indian goods, and there has been a sharp increase in fees for H-1B visas affecting Indian workers abroad. Modi’s speech linked these external pressures with India’s need to bolster domestic production and lessen foreign dependency.
Atmanirbhar Bharat as Cure
Modi reiterated that Atmanirbhar Bharat is not just a slogan but a necessity. He called for citizens to prefer goods made in India, support local industries, and back government initiatives that enhance manufacturing, infrastructure, and economic autonomy. Projects worth crores in sectors like ports, renewable energy, and coastal protection were inaugurated during the address.
