PM Modi Inaugurates Mumbai’s First Underground Metro Line

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mumbai’s first underground metro, the ₹14,120 crore BKC to Aarey Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road section of Mumbai Metro Line-3, at an event in Thane on Saturday.

This marks a significant milestone in Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure, as it aims to boost urban mobility and ease congestion in the city.

During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi flagged off the metro service that will operate between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey JVLR in western Mumbai. He also took a metro ride between BKC and Santacruz stations, experiencing firsthand the newly developed transit system that connects key areas of the city.

Mumbai Metro Line-3, also known as the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Line, is a crucial project designed to facilitate smoother commuting between Mumbai city and its suburbs. Once fully operational, the metro line is expected to handle approximately 12 lakh passengers daily, significantly reducing travel time and road traffic congestion.

Major Project Announcements

In addition to the Metro Line-3 inauguration, PM Modi laid foundation stones for several other key infrastructure projects worth over ₹32,800 crore. Among these was the Thane Integral Ring Metro Rail Project, which will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹12,200 crore. The project spans 29 km, featuring 20 elevated and 2 underground stations, and aims to address the growing transportation needs of Thane, a major industrial and commercial hub in Maharashtra.

Another major project, the Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension from Chheda Nagar to Anand Nagar in Thane, was also launched. This extension will offer seamless connectivity from south Mumbai to Thane, enhancing travel efficiency and reducing commute times for residents.

Navi Mumbai Development

The prime minister also laid the foundation stone for the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) project. The NAINA project, costing around ₹2,550 crore, involves the construction of major arterial roads, bridges, flyovers, underpasses, and integrated utility infrastructure to support the rapid urban development of Navi Mumbai.

These infrastructure projects are set to transform Mumbai’s urban landscape, boosting connectivity and economic growth. PM Modi’s visit and the inauguration of these projects reflect the government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in the region and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
