PM Modi Inaugurates International Piprahwa Relics Exposition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated an international exposition showcasing the sacred Piprahwa relics linked to Lord Buddha, marking a significant cultural and spiritual event. The exhibition brings together rare artefacts discovered at Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh, a site historically associated with early Buddhist history and relic worship.
Reunification of Historic Buddhist Relics
The Piprahwa relics were originally unearthed in the late 19th century and include bone fragments, reliquaries, and precious gems believed to be associated with Lord Buddha. Over time, parts of this collection were dispersed across countries and institutions. Recently repatriated relics have now been displayed alongside artefacts preserved in India, allowing the collection to be viewed together after more than a century.
Cultural and Spiritual Importance
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described the relics as a living symbol of India’s civilisational heritage rather than mere archaeological objects. He highlighted India’s role as the birthplace of Buddhism and emphasised the country’s responsibility in preserving and sharing this legacy with the world. The exhibition aims to strengthen cultural ties with Buddhist communities globally and promote India’s spiritual heritage.
Exhibition Features and Public Access
The exposition features dozens of objects, including reliquaries, gemstones, sculptures, and ritual items, presented with historical context for visitors. Scholars, monks, devotees, and the general public are expected to visit the exhibition, which also supports India’s broader cultural diplomacy and heritage conservation efforts.
