PM Modi Inaugurates 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Odisha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, highlighting the significant role of the Indian diaspora in shaping the nation’s global presence. The event, held from January 8 to 10, brought together dignitaries, entrepreneurs, and overseas Indians to celebrate their achievements and strengthen ties with India.

Significance of the Event

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated annually on January 9 to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in 1915, which signaled the beginning of a transformative chapter in India’s history. The event aims to honor the contributions of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) while fostering stronger connections between India and its global diaspora.

PM Modi’s Address

During his address, Prime Minister Modi underscored the Indian diaspora’s role as “India’s brand ambassadors.” He lauded their contributions to the country’s economic progress and their efforts in enhancing India’s reputation worldwide. Modi emphasized, “Pravasi Bharatiyas are integral to India’s growth story and are vital for our global outreach.”

Special Guest: President of Trinidad and Tobago

Christine Carla Kangaloo, the President of Trinidad and Tobago, graced the occasion as the chief guest. Her presence served as a symbol of the deep historical and cultural ties shared by India and its diaspora, particularly in the Caribbean, where many Indian-origin communities have thrived.

Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards

President Droupadi Murmu conferred the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards during the event. The awards recognize outstanding contributions by overseas Indians in various fields, including politics, business, science, and community service. The recipients were lauded for their efforts in fostering goodwill and strengthening India’s ties with the global community.
