PM Modi in Japan for Key Bilateral Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Tokyo tonight on his first standalone visit to Japan in seven years. He will take part in the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit on August 29–30, focusing on trade, defense, investment, and technology cooperation.

Addressing Trade Tensions and Economic Priorities

The trip comes against the backdrop of steep U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, which have hurt exports. Modi’s discussions in Japan will prioritize critical minerals, advanced manufacturing, and investment flows as India looks to deepen ties with Tokyo to offset external trade pressures.

Defense and Quad Cooperation in Focus

India and Japan are expected to upgrade their 2008 Declaration on Security Cooperation during the visit. Leaders will also reaffirm their shared commitment to the Quad, strengthening defense coordination, joint exercises, and technology exchange aimed at ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
