PM Modi Hails India’s 7.8% GDP Growth
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed India’s 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter of FY 2026-27, calling the performance a major achievement amid oil price shocks, supply-chain disruptions and global uncertainty. He also criticised pessimistic assessments of the economy, saying the latest figures had countered what he described as a “jhooth ki goonj”.
India GDP Growth Hits 7.8% in Q1 FY27
India’s real GDP expanded 7.8% year-on-year during the first quarter of FY 2026-27, compared with 6.9% in the corresponding quarter a year earlier.
The growth rate exceeded the Reserve Bank of India’s 7% projection for the quarter. Real GDP at constant prices was estimated at ₹81.36 lakh crore, while nominal GDP recorded growth of 10.3%.
The figures came despite geopolitical tensions, elevated oil prices and continuing uncertainty surrounding global supply chains.
PM Modi Targets Economic ‘Doomsayers’
Congratulating citizens, Modi attributed the performance to the collective strength, resilience and industriousness of Indians.
He criticised those he said were spreading pessimism about India’s economic prospects, using the phrase “jhooth ki goonj” — or echoes of falsehood — to describe negative narratives surrounding the economy.
The remarks represent Modi’s political assessment of criticism directed at the government’s economic record.
Modi Pushes Swadeshi and Atmanirbhar Bharat
Modi urged India to maintain its growth momentum by accelerating the push towards self-reliance.
He called on consumers to embrace “Swadeshi” and “Vocal for Local” by supporting domestically produced goods and reducing expenditure that sends money overseas.
The Prime Minister also encouraged Indians to hold weddings within the country and reconsider unnecessary foreign leisure travel, linking domestic consumption choices to India’s broader economic and self-reliance objectives.
