PM Modi Gets Grand Welcome from Maldives President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly received by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu upon his arrival in Malé on July 25. This marks Modi’s first visit to the island nation since Muizzu took office, and his welcome at the airport by the head of state is being seen as a strong gesture of diplomatic goodwill.

Symbolic Handshake at the Airport

President Muizzu personally greeted Prime Minister Modi at Velana International Airport, where the two leaders exchanged handshakes and smiles. Modi described the moment as “deeply touching,” and expressed confidence in the future of India‑Maldives relations. His arrival was met with cultural performances and enthusiastic support from Indian expatriates waving flags and chanting patriotic slogans.

Diplomatic Reboot After Tensions

The visit comes at a time of renewed engagement between the two nations, following a period of strained ties. Relations had been tested in recent years due to policy disagreements and the Maldives’ outreach to other regional powers. However, both countries have shown intent to strengthen their longstanding partnership.

Key Discussions Ahead

During his two-day visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold one-on-one talks with President Muizzu. The discussions are likely to focus on bilateral security, maritime cooperation, economic development, and the next steps under the India-Maldives Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership signed last year. Modi’s trip also coincides with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence and 60 years of India-Maldives diplomatic ties.

The visit is being closely watched for signs of a strategic reset in India’s neighborhood diplomacy, especially in the Indian Ocean region.
