PM Modi Expected in US in September for UNGA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States in September to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The high-level General Debate will take place from September 23 to 29, with Modi likely to deliver his address on September 26. This visit will mark his first trip to the U.S. since the start of the current tariff dispute with Washington.

Trade Tensions as Backdrop

The backdrop to the visit is a sharp escalation in trade tensions between India and the U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 50 percent on certain Indian exports, citing India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian oil and other trade imbalances. India has defended its economic decisions as being in the national interest, while also urging dialogue to resolve differences.

Expected Bilateral Talks

During his U.S. stay, Modi is expected to engage in a bilateral meeting with Trump, although formal confirmation is still awaited. Trade disputes, investment opportunities, and cooperation in technology and defense are likely to dominate the agenda. The visit could also serve as a platform for both leaders to address broader geopolitical challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Indo-Pacific security, and reforms to multilateral institutions.

Preparations Underway

Preparations for the trip are in progress, with official announcements expected by late August. The visit will be closely watched for any breakthroughs in easing trade frictions and for signals on the future direction of India-U.S. relations.
