PM Modi Criticizes Historical Role of Single Family on Constitution Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of Constitution Day, strongly criticized the role of a single political family, alleging that they caused significant damage to the Indian Constitution.
Without naming names, Modi’s remarks were widely seen as a pointed reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family, sparking debate and reactions across political circles.
Addressing a gathering in New Delhi, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of protecting the Constitution and the democratic values enshrined in it. He pointed out instances in Indian history where the actions of influential leaders and political groups had allegedly undermined constitutional principles.
“Constitution Over Family”
PM Modi stressed that no individual or family should prioritize personal or political ambitions over the Constitution. “From Nehru’s era to recent times, one family has inflicted the maximum damage on our Constitution,” he said, underscoring the need for continuous vigilance to safeguard democratic ideals.
The Prime Minister highlighted key events in Indian history, such as the Emergency period of 1975, which he described as one of the darkest phases for democracy. He further criticized what he termed the “dynastic politics” that he claimed had stifled India’s democratic growth.
Opposition Reacts
The Congress party quickly responded to the Prime Minister’s remarks, accusing him of politicizing Constitution Day to target opponents. Senior Congress leaders defended the Nehru-Gandhi family’s contributions to India’s development and called Modi’s comments a diversion from pressing issues.
Focus on Democratic Reforms
PM Modi also used the platform to advocate for reforms that would strengthen India’s democratic fabric. He highlighted the government’s initiatives to ensure inclusivity and efficiency in governance, stating that upholding the Constitution remains the cornerstone of India’s progress.
Constitution Day, celebrated annually on November 26, commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949. PM Modi’s remarks have added a sharp political tone to the day, setting the stage for further debates in the lead-up to the general elections.
