PM Modi Arrives in Russia for BRICS Summit, Set to Meet Putin Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, focusing on strengthening the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between India and Russia.
The summit, which is themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” will serve as a key platform for discussions on global issues and cooperation among the BRICS member nations.
In addition to meeting Putin, PM Modi is expected to engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other BRICS leaders. The meeting comes amid ongoing global unrest, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the crisis in the Middle East.
BRICS Summit in the Context of Global Unrest
The summit holds particular significance given the current geopolitical tensions. India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasized the country’s commitment to peace and diplomacy during an interview, highlighting India’s stance on resolving conflicts through dialogue. This position was reiterated by PM Modi, who recently called on all parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine war to seek peaceful resolutions.
During his earlier interactions, Putin acknowledged Modi as a “friend” and expressed appreciation for India’s support in promoting dialogue and stability. This meeting is the second visit to Russia by the Indian Prime Minister this year, following his participation in the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in July, where he received Russia’s highest civilian award, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.
India and China Resume Patrolling at LAC
A significant diplomatic breakthrough ahead of the BRICS Summit was India and China agreeing to resume joint patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, marking a key step towards disengagement. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the agreement and hinted at a possible meeting between PM Modi and President Xi during the summit, although details were still being finalized.
The BRICS Summit, with leaders from nine nations in attendance, aims to assess ongoing initiatives and explore new avenues for collaboration. With pressing global issues on the agenda, the summit is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping future multilateral engagements and fostering stronger international partnerships.
