PM Modi Announces GST 2.0, Pushes Swadeshi in Address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced sweeping reforms in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, set to take effect on September 22, 2025. He launched the “GST Bachat Utsav” (Savings Festival), stating that the changes will particularly benefit the poor and middle class. The revised GST and income tax measures are expected to save citizens nearly ₹2.5 lakh crore.
Call to Encourage Domestic Goods
In his address, Modi appealed to Indians to take pride in Swadeshi (locally made) products. He urged consumers and shopkeepers alike to prioritize Indian-made goods, saying reducing reliance on foreign products would strengthen the country’s economy.
Self-Reliance & Growth Focus
The Prime Minister highlighted the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). He said the reforms will accelerate growth, improve ease of doing business, and make essential goods more affordable. According to him, the changes are a “double bonanza” for households and small businesses.
Political & Public Response
Industry groups and allied parties have largely welcomed the announcement, calling it timely and beneficial. However, opposition leaders criticized the reforms as inadequate, arguing that certain essential goods continue to face higher tax slabs.
