PM Modi Acknowledges Dhankhar’s Contributions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended warm wishes to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar following his resignation citing health reasons. In a public message, the PM noted that Dhankhar had “many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India,” and expressed his hope for Dhankhar’s speedy recovery and well-being.
Sudden Exit from High Office
Dhankhar stepped down from his position on July 21, just two years into his five-year term. In his resignation letter, he cited health concerns and emphasised the need to “prioritise health care” as per Article 67(a) of the Constitution. The resignation took effect immediately after it was accepted by the President.
Steady Support Amidst Speculation
Modi’s message came shortly after President Droupadi Murmu granted acceptance to Dhankhar’s resignation. By highlighting Dhankhar’s record of public service, Modi sought to recognise his contributions at a time when speculations about underlying political tensions have surfaced. The PM’s gesture has been viewed as a respectful nod to the Vice President’s tenure and an attempt to maintain unity amid unfolding political dynamics.
What Leaving the Seat Means
As Dhankhar steps down, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh will preside over the Rajya Sabha in the interim. The Election Commission is expected to announce a new vice-presidential election within the constitutionally mandated 60-day window. The ruling alliance is already in discussions to finalise a replacement candidate.
