PM Inaugurates BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G in Odisha
On September 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated BSNL’s fully indigenous 4G (Swadeshi 4G) network in Jharsuguda, Odisha, marking a key step in India’s drive for telecom self-reliance.
Scale & Reach
Alongside the launch, he commissioned over 97,500 mobile 4G towers, including 92,600 sites using domestic technology, with an estimated investment of ₹37,000 crore. The network aims to connect more than 26,700 unconnected villages, including 2,472 in Odisha.
Technology & Upgradability
The new 4G stack is cloud-based, scalable, and engineered for seamless future upgrades to 5G. Many of the towers are solar-powered, making them part of India’s largest cluster of green telecom infrastructure.
Strategic Significance
The move places India among a small group of nations that develop and deploy telecom equipment indigenously. It aligns with the government’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat and strengthens digital infrastructure in rural and remote regions.
Challenges & Expectations
While the rollout promises to bridge the digital divide, its success depends on timely execution, maintenance, and last-mile connectivity. Ensuring quality service in remote areas and integrating with existing networks will be critical in delivering benefits to underserved populations.
